Laparoscopic-adjustable gastric banding

Procedure:magenband

A band is wrapped around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small gastric pouch above the band. The food passes gradually through to the stomach. As the pouch is filled, it results to an earlier sense of satiety. Moreover the gastric banding can be individual adjusted without further surgery via a silicone tube and an injection port.

Hospital stay: 1-2 days

Excessive weight loss: 40-60% in 2 years

Advantages of laparoscopic-adjustable gastric banding:

Without any trans-section or stapling of the stomach or gut, gastric banding is the least invasive bariatric procedure. It comes along with a shorter hospital stay and recovery time. The main advantages are its individual adjustability to the patients’ demands and its reversibility. For instance in case of a pregnancy the inner diameter of the gastric band can be increased to fulfill the higher nutritional requirements. No iron, calcium or vitamins deficiencies are expected as the weight loss is achieved by limiting the food intake.

Disadvantages of laparoscopic-adjustable gastric banding:

The expected weight loss is less after laparoscopic gastric banding compared with other bariatric procedures. A drastic change in diet and physical activity is a demand. Repetitive dietary mistakes as well as intake of high-caloric sodas and fruit juices lead to a weight gain. Furthermore numerous gastric band adjustments may be necessary to achieve an optimal sense of satiety.
